Starving Children Are Funny? (VIDEO)

Were the gates of Hell unlocked unleashing demons to corrupt our government and our true values?  Surely these voices we’re hearing can’t be human.  We hear a lot of talk about “values” but when did stealing food from a child to give to a millionaire become an American value?  Our founding fathers have to be spinning like tops in their graves.

The farm bill passed by the House of Representatives last week is a perfect example of the purely inhumane disregard that is at work in our nation.

It’s one thing to say we have to cut spending and convince people it’s true, even when it’s based on false data, but it’s quite another to say we have to remove food assistance to hungry children and the elderly while we give $137 billion to corporate farmers to keep them in the style they’ve become accustomed to in the same damn bill.  These millionaires have to be protected from feeling any pinch whatsoever due to the economy but children can just go on crying from hunger.

While we’re thinking about that $137 billion give-away to millionaire corporate farmers let’s consider the fact that the entire SNAP program only cost $81 billion in fiscal year 2012. (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities)  That $81 billion provides food assistance to hungry children all over this country as well as helping supply food banks, soup kitchens and other nutrition programs.

When people think of the farm bill, they most likely remember when it was a subsidy to family farms so they didn’t lose their farm due to one bad season when they were hit with a drought or another disaster.  At that point it really was a subsidy to the needy whether it was subsidizing nutrition for the poor or helping family farms stay viable so there would be food for everybody.

However with the advent of factory farms we are now giving billions of dollars to millionaires when we talk farm subsidies.  These are not the farms Willie Nelson did fundraisers for to help save…these are megabucks corporate farmers, some of who are in congress, getting these subsidies.

Now while we’re hearing all of this rhetoric about how we have a spending problem and we have to get rid of everything that helps the poor we’re still handing over money to the wealthy.  Doesn’t anybody else have a problem with that?  We have such a massive corporate welfare system that the poor are being sacrificed on the altar of it.

Now let’s look at how the Republicans and their supporters feel about that because some of them actually get excited and express joy at the thought of taking food out of the mouths of hungry children to hand to millionaires. Some of them are already getting large salaries from the taxpayers for representing us.

Take a few minutes to watch and listen to the following video to see how much glee that “good Christian woman” Laura Ingraham expresses at the thought of people being left without food.  She compares them to the “roof squatters”…yes she actually uses that term for people drowning during the Katrina hurricane disaster…and finds pleasure in the fact that they will starve when their food stamps don’t come.  She actually calls the SNAP program that feeds hungry children the “pork” in the bill while she thinks it’s just fine to hand over nearly twice as much as SNAP costs to corporate millionaires.

And here’s an example of the lies they tell to keep us from tarring and feathering them and running them out of town:

If you can buy King Crab Legs for $1.40 for one person I suggest you buy them all day long and start a business because you can’t even afford ground beef every night on that.

What has happened to us?  What has left us so deluded that people like this even dare speak their lies and greed in public and we actually listen?  Why would we ever listen to someone who would steal food from hungry children to give it to millionaires?

And let’s be clear, this isn’t about the government being broke and needing to cut spending because they have no problem whatsoever giving nearly twice as much money to millionaire corporate farmers as it takes to give the hungry in this country a bare minimum of food.

And the really ridiculous part is that what is spent on SNAP also comes back to those corporate farmers through the food that is bought.  But their $137 billion plus what they make back from the SNAP food purchases aren’t enough…they want it all and these people are more than willing to give it to them.

The only good news is that we still have some sanity in the Senate and the president still has a veto pen. It is most likely that this is just more grandstanding for their base, but shouldn’t they be addressing why so many Americans can’t get a job that pays a living wage instead?  Isn’t the real problem that so many people actually need SNAP?

This is a perfect example of how these people think and why we need to take them out of office and turn them off when they’re on TV.  If anyone had dared say these things and reveal this kind of wicked greed in public in the 1960s and 1970s they would have been run out of town on a rail.
Where is our sense of decency and who stole it?
