San Francisco sports radio host Damon Bruce says American sports have softened up since women have gotten more involved and are ‘giving us directions’.
Bruce also believes that women should accept a secondary role to men in sports and he’s very unapologetic about it.
A lot of sports has lost its way, and I’m gonna tell you, part of the reason is because we’ve got women giving us directions. For some of you, this is going to come across as very misogynistic. I don’t care, because I’m very right. Remember, this is my box. I didn’t get into yours. I didn’t slip into your world. You came into mine.
Bruce also said women should accept a certain amount of ‘Neanderthal’, citing the Miami Dolphins bullying case as an example. Bruce believes Dolphins Offensive Lineman Richie Incognito isn’t the ‘the monster everybody makes him out to be’ while blaming the problem on teammate Jonathan Martin.
A lot of the problem is based in Jonathan Martin’s inability to deal with a professional locker room environment, which might have turned unprofessional. But again, I’m gonna quote Chris Rock: The key word in self-confidence is self.
Deadspin reported that Incognito left this voice message for Martin:
Hey, wassup, you half ni**er piece of sh*t. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s**t in your f**king mouth. [I’m going to] slap your f**king mouth. [I’m going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F**k you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.
Sounds like a real stand up guy.
Also, Bruce attacked Bay Area Sports Guy writer Wendy Thurm and women in general:
I enjoy Wendy’s contributions to the sports that she covers. I enjoy many of the women’s contributions to the sports – well that’s a lie. I can’t even pretend that’s true. There are very few — a small handful of women who are any good at this at all. That’s the truth. The amount of women talking in sports to the amount of women who have something to say is one of the most disproportionate ratios I’ve ever seen in my fricking life.
After going on this rant, BASG says the KNBR 1050 host is just desperate for attention. They also said he can dish it, but is thin-skinned when he’s on the receiving end.
As angry as people were today at his comments, attention is what he seeks. He’s a radio host. The two most successful people in his industry, if we move beyond sports, are Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh. During a relatively slow week for Bay Area sports chatter (no baseball games or signings of note; NBA/NHL just got started; 49ers came off a bye), the Incognito/Martin story fell into Bruce’s lap and he made a decision as a host to put all his chips in the “let’s cater to manly-men who think only wimps get bullied” basket.
Awful Announcing’s Matt Yoder took a jab at Bruce as well.
After receiving plenty of negative (but apparently wanted) attention, Bruce left this tweet.
Here’s Bruce’s controversial statements in the audio clip below.
