George H.W. Bush Official Witnesses for Same-Sex Marriage

There’s no need to point out that Democrats aren’t fans of the Bush men, but being the fair-minded liberals that we are, we’re willing to put politics aside and note when one of them does something praise-worthy. In particular, “Poppy” (aka Pres. George H.W. Bush) has done some things as he’s aged that soften our hearts (a little bit).  Well, guess what he’s done now? He’s gone off and not only attended a same-sex wedding, but he served as a witness.

The former president, along with his wife Barbara, both served as the official witnesses for the marriage of their friends Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen. Same-sex marriage was legalized in Maine in December.

Clement, 60, and Thorgalsen, 55, own a general store in the area of Maine where the Bush matriarch and patriarch live. They’ve been a couple for 12 years and have raised Thorgalsen’s daughters together.

Bush Sr.’s deed came to light when Torgalsen posted a Facebook photo with this message:

“Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

Via email, Clement told the Washington Post that  they were delighted when the Bushes accepted the wedding invitation and asked them “to really personalize it for us.”

This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system. Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being ‘real and normal.’
