The Daily Show’s Jason Jones tries to talk one-on-one with GOP strategist Noelle Nikpour, but after running into a series of dead ends, he sought out the help of a hostage negotiator to help him get somewhere with Nikpour.
The Jones-Nikpour discussion was over Obamacare. Nikpour declared that for the shutdown to end, President Obama must agree to defund Obamacare. Jones pointed out that Obamacare is now the law of the land, to which Nikpour said that the law is unconstitutional, even though the Supreme Court placed its stamp of approval on it. Jones gave up at that point and recruited former FBI hostage negotiator Christopher Voss to help him out.
Voss schooled Jones on why people take hostages – they’ve ran out of options, or have become marginalized, or feel that people should be following them, but are not. Voss also said, “Even batsh*t insane has its own rules,” and to talk with hostage-takers you determine what those rules are “and then you navigate within those rules.”
So with Voss literally in his ear, Jones goes back to try again with Nikpour, armed with a megaphone. Under Voss’s instruction, Jones was to try and find common ground and not be condescending. But as you will see, Jones failed, leading Voss to admit that he’s never encountered anything quite like this before.
The best part is when Nikpour said that Obamacare would be the worst thing that ever happened to the country. Jones yelled through his megaphone, “Do you remember f*cking slavery?”
