Texas state Rep. Drew Darby (R-San Angelo) received a third-degree felony charge for illegally carrying a handgun at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, police said on Friday.
Darby, 66, who is chairman of the House Redistricting Committee, was arrested on November 14th after airport officials found a loaded .380 Ruger in his carry-on bag for a flight and called for an officer.
Darby was booked in Travis County Jail and later released on $5,000 bond.
The Texas Rep. says he forgot to take the gun out the bag before the incident occurred.
According to the Associated Press, Darby released a statement saying he has a concealed carry permit and he regretted his mistake at the airport.
This year, the Transportation Safety Administration seized more than 1,500 guns so far in 2013, more than all of 2012.
