Ted Cruz, the first-term Republican Senator from Texas, has been called the “Distinguished Wacko Bird From Texas.” And it has been said that the term is fondly embraced by the Senator and his base of followers.
As a result of his shenanigans leading the charge during the recent GOP/Teabully Government shutdown debacle, the majority of American voters, including many staunch Republicans, are moving away from the Texas Senator. Yet Senator Cruz, perhaps the wackiest amongst a flock of “Wacko Birds” who will be jockeying for prominence during the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination process, keeps singing his own praises.
While Senator Cruz still has a very healthy 60 percent favorability rating among Republicans, his popularity is mostly with the Teabully base and his negative rating has risen to 17 percent among Republicans. His favorability rating is a mere 31 percent among all Americans while 43 percent of Americans have a negative view of Senator Cruz.
Yes, the Government shutdown might have worked well for Senator Cruz’s popularity among his Teabully base while helping him raise campaign cash, but it hasn’t worked to the benefit of other Republican elected officials. Consider House Speaker John Boehner who has seen his favorability numbers among Republicans slip to 52 percent while Republican Senate Minority leader, Mitch McConnell, who is facing a tough fight in Kentucky to keep his job, now has a favorability rating among Republicans of 37 percent.
Consider the recent polling by CNN/ORC showing that 75 percent of respondents said that Republicans in Congress did not deserve re-election. 54 percent said Democrats did not deserve re-election to Congress. Any way you look at it, the polling shows that the GOP/Teabully party is in trouble, with generic Democrats now holding an eight to nine-point lead over sitting Republicans in the House. Further, given the recent polling and with only 17 seats needed to turn the Speakership back to the Democrats, and with 17 House seats in districts won by President Obama in 2012, this seems to be within reach. And 80 percent of respondents felt that the government shutdown was a bad thing for the country.
But Senator Cruz thinks that his fake filibuster, and the Government shutdown during his ill-fated attempt to defund Obamacare, while risking worldwide economic Armageddon, was a sound strategy that should have succeeded. Cruz blamed the failure on Senate Republicans who did not hang in with him and the GOP/Teabully House. He referred to the tactics by his fellow GOP Senators who failed to stand with the House as being like an air force bombing our own troops. Senator Cruz said “It was an incredible victory.”
Last weekend, before going for a shoot em up outing with Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa’s 4th District, despite the fact that the effort failed to defund the ACA while also causing the economy to lose 24 Billion Dollars, Cruz said: “This fight was worth it.”
Sadly, there is reality and even many Republicans disagree with Senator Cruz.
Republican Congressman Peter King of New York’s 2nd District has said that Senator Cruz is making the Republican Party “look like crazies.”
Speaking about the possibility of another Government shutdown, which Congressman King anticipates that Senator Cruz and the 30 to 40 other Teabully hardliners will attempt soon again, King said:
“I’m hoping other Republicans will join me and start going after this guy, and say we’re not going to let it happen again.”
Then, there is noted former Republican Senator from Pennsylvania, and noted “Wacko Bird” himself, Rick Santorum, who is occupied these days selling his Christian film business while also continuing to raise money for the cause of Rick Santorum. Senator Santorum is not liking Cruz staking out GOP primary voters to his right. In an attempt to get to the right of Senator Cruz, Santorum has said that the effort to defund the ACA did more harm than good.
Cruz and other Republicans know that the public will like Obamacare and they know it will work. This is what they fear most and why there has been such an organized and well funded effort to damage the ACA and to prevent it from functioning as intended from its inception. Back in July, during an interview with Sean Hannity, Cruz and Hannity lamented that if they don’t repeal it now “Obamacare will never, ever get repealed.”
Yes, the truth is that Republicans don’t like the ACA because it is very bad for their brand and “they’re terrified that Americans are going to like it.”
Worse, the Teabully brand also stands to be tarnished further as once the ACA is fully up and running, the base of the Teabully branch of the GOP:
Another large faction of the GOP/Teabully base said:
“Medicare recipients will get a benefit worth several hundred dollars a year.”
Yes, thanks to Republicans like Senator Ted Cruz, the ACA is now more popular than the GOP. And you can even find that on the Drudge Report.
So, keep talking, and talking, and talking Senator Cruz. Because if the Democrats get the House of Representatives back into their hands, it could be two more years of complete Democratic control of the Congress. And just as it was during the first two years of the Obama Administration, a lot of good just might get done.
And if the fears of Republicans like Ted Cruz are right, Obamacare does work and people start to like it even more than they do now, just like seniors who say “keep your Government hands off my Medicare,” you will hear Democrats and the country rejoicing.
You might also hear the country singing from a familiar Ira Gershwin song:
