In a fascinating back and forth between Morning Joe host, Joe Scarborough and his co-host, Mika Brzezinski over CNN and NBC’s plans to air Hillary Clinton specials and RNC Chairman, Reince Priebus’ threat to cancel any future debates on the two networks.
Brzezinski started the conversation by pointing out the hypocrisy in Priebus’ charge, namely, the existence of Fox News. Or as she put it, “except that the Republicans have their own network that has a president that goes and asks people to run for the party.”
Scarborough countered by saying, “Every time you bring up Fox, you’ve got to bring up MSNBC.”
Brezinski responded, “Not really. Because I don’t see MSNBC going after Democratic presidential candidates and trying to hire them or trying to push them into forefront, and everything you read is that [Fox News President] Roger Ailes gets behind Republican candidates, he hires them, he puts them on the air. It is a mouthpiece for the Republican Party.”
Then Scarborough dropped this, “I’m sorry, I can’t just be quiet here. What do you think MSNBC is at night?” Scarborough continued. “It is exactly the same!”
Scarborough then went on to joke about how “much trouble” he was in and that he needed to call his agent.
It was an interesting and amusing discussion. While I lean towards Brezinski’s point of view, it’s impossible to argue that the evening line up on MSNBC is not expressly liberal. One could argue there is very little news on the cable networks during prime time, but there is a lot of opinion and advocacy. Is MSNBC more ethical than Fox? You bet your boots. That being said, Joe does have a point in there somewhere, just not a perfect one.
