Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) tweeted a cartoon this week featuring a gun with the words “NRA” along with the U.S. Capital and Washington Monument attached to it. The point of the cartoon was to show that the NRA really does rule the roost in Washington. The pro-gun politicians, which includes virtually all Republicans and even a few Democrats, are bought and paid for.
The cartoon was created by The Big Slice’s own Bill Day. Cohen mentioned Day during a discussion with an MSNBC panel. As the discussion begins, Cohen is asked about Day’s cartoon that he tweeted during the aftermath of the Navy Yard massacre in Washington, D.C. Many on the right believed that Cohen’s intent was to blame the powerful NRA for the shooting.
Cohen responded, “Bill Day is one of the great cartoonists, and is one of my friends and constituents. He’s been doing a series on gun violence and how it’s affected America.”
“The truth is that the NRA has controlled the process here with contributions and, more than that, with a grip on a lot of people who are one-issue people who are very, very vitriolic in their defense of the 2nd Amendment,” Cohen continued. “So I wanted to show that we have gun violence and a gun culture. We need to respond to it. We’d like to get the debate going or there will be more killings. We need to do something, even if only a mental health bill.”
“I wanted to get Bill Day’s cartoon out there in the marketplace of ideas, and I think there definitely is a connection between the NRA and the continuing gun culture that we have.”
Cohen, who is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, would later refer to his fellow members of the committee as a “murderer’s row” who “all like their guns.”
