Immigration activists fasting to protest the lack of action on immigration in the House of Representatives got a big surprise on Friday: a visit from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The activists have had only water for eighteen days.
The group is called Fast For Families, and they have erected a white tent on the National Mall, marking their protest. President Obama reportedly told them that he supports their efforts, and that there is time left in the legislative year for immigration reform to be addressed by the House of Representatives.
Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) has thus far refused to allow the immigration reform bill to come to the house floor for a vote, though it may still pass, even in the Republican controlled House of Representatives.
Immigration reform activists say that Boehner’s inaction is inexcusable, especially in the wake of the fact that there are families that are splintered by deportations and livelihoods ruined, when people are just trying to make better lives for themselves and their families.
Vice President Joe Biden has also paid a visit to the activists.
