Thursday, British police arrested a couple under the suspicion that they were holding three women as slaves for 30 years. police didn’t give much information on the suspects, who are both 67 years old, but they said they were not British nationals and they were released on bail.
Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland said one of the women – the only Briton out of the trio – was held captive her entire life. She is now 30 years old. The other women – a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 69-year-old Malaysian woman – have been taken somewhere safe and a charity is taking care of them.
Chances at freedom for these women were slim until one of them contacted Freedom Charity, an organization aimed at fighting slavery and domestic servitude, in October.
Freedom Charity Founder and President Aneeta Prem had this to say:
They basically told us that they were being held and they needed support to come out of a very difficult situation. As a charity, we take every call very seriously. We have a 24/7 help line, which they contacted. From that moment onward, it was very sensitive negotiations in order to assist them in escaping.
Detective Hyland said he’s seen many that were held captive for long periods of time, but never a case where victim were held for this long.
We’ve seen some cases where people have been held for up to 10 years, but we’ve never seen anything of this magnitude before.
