Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, came out against the NYPD’s “Stop and Frisk” policy this morning on NBC’s Meet The Press.
Fulton, who has become an eloquent if unexpected activist, told Gregory,
“You can’t give people the authority, whether civilian or police officers the right to just stop somebody because of the color of their skin.”
The policy that allows police officers to detain and frisk citizens regardless of suspicion has been in effect for over a decade. A recent study determined that 87% of the 5 million people stopped have been black or Hispanic. The policy has only led to an arrest or summons 10 % of the time.
