By now, you may have heard that John Boehner lied on national television this past weekend over whether or not he had the votes to end the government shutdown without tying it to Obamacare. Plain and simple, he does have the votes. Most or all of the 200 Democrats as well as at least 20 Republicans will vote “yes” on such a bill, which would put it past the 217 votes needed for it to pass.
President Obama, in a press conference on Monday, dared Boehner to put a clean government funding bill to a vote, saying that he strongly suspects that it would pass.
And now, one of Boehner’s colleagues in the house, Republican Rep. Charlie Dent from Pennsylvania, also says that Boehner has the votes.
“I am going to insist that the speaker try to bring out a clean continuing resolution to the one I said I would support,” Dent told Wolf Blitzer on CNN.
Dent added that there is enough support in the House to pass a motion that would fund the government for six months and repeal the medical device tax contained within Obamacare. If that doesn’t happen, Dent said he would also support a “clean” continuing resolution.
“I would urge the speaker to bring it out for a voter,” Dent said. “I believe the votes are there.”
So, come on Mr. Speaker! You have claimed for months that you didn’t want to shut the government down. And you did. And now, you won’t put it to a vote because you know it will pass and you haven’t held the country hostage for long enough, apparently.
