Beauty Again Bites The Dust: Western Black Rhinoceros Declared Extinct

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources has updated its list of threatened species Wednesday, and the Western Black Rhinoceros has been declared extinct.

A recent survey of the West African black rhino by a French-based survey group has failed to locate any sign of their continued presence. As a result this subspecies has been tentatively declared as extinct. -Dr. Martin Brooks

Simon Stuart chair of the ICUN species survival commission had this to say:

In the case of the western black rhino and the northern white rhino the situation could have had very different results if the suggested conservation measures had been implemented.

The demand for rhino horn is driven by demand from Vietnam and Asia and is a component in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The demand will not diminish until both the poachers and the buyers have to spend years in prison. If Vietnam and China were to simply make possession of the horns either a capital offense or a crime that came with decades of imprisonment, the rhino crisis would be over.

The Western Black Rhinoceros was declared extinct today, and in other news, humans suck.

What say you, the people?
